I've continued to receive an occasional note complimenting me on the site. Thanks, I appreciate that. I'm glad it's still being enjoyed. I have no immediate plans to pull it.
I've also gotten several emails suggesting that the Diet Mountain Dew sales spike might be because of people hoarding the old formula. I really don't think so. The datum that sounded the death knell was that convenience store sales of Diet Mountain Dew were up 17%. People hoard at grocery stores and warehouse clubs, not convenience stores. Even the most crazed hoarders who purchased it everywhere they saw it couldn't possibly account for such a large increase. If it's up 17% at convenience stores, then folks are buying it. I should point out that I got this figure from John Sicher, the editor of Beverage Digest, so I'm confident it's accurate.
Guess what else? I have totally eliminated my habitual use of caffeine. As I write, it is the end of day two. Two aspirin when I wake up have effectively prevented the terrible headache I expected I would get. I didn't taper much at all, either. I've been surprised at how easy it's been. I certainly did sleep soundly last night, too! Now I'm going to have a Starbucks once in a while, and I'll still eat a Cadbury creme egg or two at Easter. What I've ceased is the continuous use.
And though my fingers are hardly crossed, I'll definitely have a Diet Mountain Dew if the previous formula is ever again available.
