Thursday miscellanea #158

  • This week has been a waistline disaster so far.  Yipes.  I need to recover the second half of it with some sustained dedication.
  • Ten weeks until Christmas.  Chop chop.  You’re welcome.
  • All right, I’m definitely clicked on Gears of War 3 now.  It falls by the end of the weekend.
  • The NCAA has closed its investigation of Auburn, finding no major violations.  The Auburn online community has subsequently bubbled over with orgasmic vindication.  Folks, I’m delighted for you.  Congratulations.  (And just remember, O.J. was acquitted too.)  I’m much more pleased that you’re back to where you belong in the SEC pecking order.
  • My station at Hughes and Madison Boulevard that used to sell 100% gasoline has fallen to the dark side.  Does anyone know of anyplace in Madison or Limestone selling ethanol-free gasoline?  My rigorously-kept records show that I do indeed get an occasional extra day between fill-ups if I keep alcohol out of the tank of the Technical Writing Express.  I’d like to continue reproducing those results, if I can.
  • The remade Red Dawn has been pushed to a 2012 release.  Sigh.  Surely this won’t be any good now.  I’ve anticipated it for too long.
  • I had occasion to read about the sieve of Eratosthenes yesterday.  I love encountering things like that, and then getting to ponder them for a bit.  I really enjoy considering the fundamental intersection between mathematics and philosophy.  I mean, we’re talking about a fellow trying to explain his world 2,200 years ago or so.  Neat!

  1. Glad to see you getting on Auburn again. Every time you do, they seem to win (think MSU (will they break .500?) and USC (no chance in the next 4 games.)) Last week you left them alone and Arkansas pasted them. I guess Florida will lose three in a row thanks to you. Please refrain from comment after the Florida game as I want LSU still undefeated after they beat Alabama.

  2. I was told by a former co-worker (another100% gasoline purist) that the station on Hughes btw Madison Blvd and the post office is 100% … of course that was over a year ago, but might be worth checking.

Why is there ethanol in the gasoline nowadays anyway? For the eco-centric folks? Another gov’t mandated thing that benefits the corn growers and screws us? I don’t keep fastidious logs, nor do I really worry about pure gasoline, but the former co-worker railed and railed about how the ethanol was so bad for the hoses and things in the engine. Really? I’ve not seen that issue with my CRV and she’s @ 50,000 and going strong. Then again, wonder how long it takes for any damage to show up … and would said damage really happen because of ethanol or just normal wear/tear/age.

Personally, I worry more about keep the proper tire pressure. Mileage is way better when I keep an eye on that instead of corn in my gas.

  3. Cookie Monster, I’m in your head rent-free. 😉

wxchick, I strongly suspect that’s the same station I’m talking about that just fell to the dark side, but thanks. Ethanol is in gasoline partially because of environmental legislation–it satisfies oxygenated requirements much more soundly than did MTBE, the old way–and because of a powerful lobby for it. I tend to think concerns about wear on fuel system parts are overblown.

I like 100% gasoline because I get more range with it. An additional 20 miles per tank isn’t unheard of, and as I said, that can occasionally mean an extra day between fill-ups.
