Thursday miscellanea #86

  • Two people injured in a chemical explosion yesterday at Redstone Arsenal have died.  God be with their families and friends.
  • Charles and I went out for Cinco de Mayo last night.  Actually that’s not true; we went out to a Mexican place, and it was accidentally May 5.  It went okay, considering.
  • I’m not so worried about how long it took Barack Obama to see the oil disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, just as I wasn’t so worried about how long it took George W. Bush to see the effects of Katrina.  I do have a substantial problem with anyone who has no problem with the former, but wailed/wails endlessly about the latter.
  • Speaking of:  folks, it’s a horrible thing that’s happened, but we still have to have oil, and we still have to keep getting it this way.  To pretend otherwise is fantasy.  In fact, getting it close to home makes a lot more sense, both economically and environmentally, than tanking it in.  Excellent editorial here.
  • Sometimes I think the United States is the only adult nation in a sea of children.  I thought that again recently when Iran landed a spot on a women’s rights commission at the United Nations.
  • Here is a quick IQ test for you.  True or false:  radical Islamic fundamentalists are at war with the United States, and it is eminently reasonable to suspect such connections when terrorist acts are committed, or attempts discovered.  Is your answer a) True; or b) You failed the IQ test?

  1. You know, it’s probably because The Keystone Cop Terrorist tried to bomb Times Square and there’s an oil spill in the Gulf that’s the fault of a evil, multinational corporation, but did anyone notice that Nashville got friggin’ wiped out last week? I was raised in Franklin and most of my family is still in that area. It was bad, dude. It’ll be bad for a long time to come. 2nd Avenue looked awful.

  2. I’ve started a post about it several times, and never finished one because it’s gotten spittle-flecked with rage. Nothing quite like a double standard, is there?

I like Nashville. Some favorite chapters of my life have been written there. God be with them. It’s bad; you’re right.

  3. I’ve talked to most of my family and they were all spared any real damage. Estimates right now for Nashville alone are over $1 billion – worst disaster to hit that part of the country since the Civil War.

Will Sean Penn be sinking a boat in the Cumberland River in an attempt to “help out”?

  4. I tried to “go there” in my post, but people won’t “get” it anyway. So, I left it. But, I cannot help think how much Nashville reminds me of Mississippi. The MS coastline was completely washed away by Katrina, but the only think I remember on the news about them was people hitching up their britches and getting to work. I suppose that’s as good a legacy as any, but it doesn’t get you attention on the TeeVee.

    Bless our hearts.
