Thursday miscellanea #79

  • Saw Saintseester yesterday.  She’s doing all right.
  • The boys have been out all week, and now a mini-spring break for me is on.  We’re going to do some geocaching today.
  • “I am a Republican who very much wanted something like George W. Bush’s Social Security reform to pass. But if Republicans had acted in a sneaky and highly partisan manner to pass it, I would have been embarrassed — and said so. Social Security is a broadly American concern. Why aren’t Democrats embarrassed about health care? Is it sheer moral vanity — the belief that they are doing something noble, no matter how much the yahoos squawk?” – Jay Nordlinger
  • I’ve been alive most of 39 years, and cooking in earnest for about 30, and I never figured out until Tuesday night that if you almost-but-not-quite defrost a frozen piece of chicken, you can cut it as easily as an apple.  Then, defrost it the rest of the way and go. The chicken pieces in our pasta were remarkably uniform (and thinner than I ever thought possible).  Can’t wait to do it for fajitas.
  • I get a bit irritated at the boys for not taking more care brushing their teeth, but then I consider that I wasn’t so good about it either, and it worked out.  They’re probably doing well enough.
  • The first Indy Grand Prix of Alabama approaches!

  1. I learned the chicken thing a couple of weeks ago, I’m embarrassed to say. Made kick-ass chicken sandwiches after marinating the slices in greek salad dressing, cooking them up in my cast-iron skillet, and serving them cheesesteak style on crusty rolls with provolone and sauteed peppers and onions. I recommend it.

And I still prefer Formula 1.

  2. kemtee, I’ll put that in my pocket. And what an odd thing for two people of our respective experiences and ages to learn so close to each other. 🙂

I would like to care more about F1 than I do. I don’t like that they never run ovals. The IndyCar season is about 50/50 ovals/street and road courses.

  3. See, I like that they DON’T run ovals. I much prefer the curves of Monaco and the unpredictability of say, Monza to “go fast and turn left.” Even with NASCAR I watch Watkins Glen and that’s about it. Now F1 politics… gah. The rule changes this year are already starting to turn me away.

    But hey, racing, right?

  4. I grew up going to ovals–Talladega and Atlanta, mostly; grew up less than half an hour from the former–back when NASCAR was much more exciting than it is today. So that’s part of it. I love seeing them at 230+ mph, and I like that there’s more passing. I’m warming to street and road courses.

I’ve only ever paid enough attention to F1 politics to know that there’s a huge anti-American snobbery about the whole thing.

    Racing indeed. 🙂
