Thursday miscellanea #40

  • Headed out to our local killer Mexican joint in a bit.  Looking forward to it.
  • Barack Obama had a moustache giving his speech in Egypt—thin, but there.  I believe that makes him the first president with facial hair (in public, anyway) since Taft.
  • David Carradine has died at 72, apparently by hanging and not the Five Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique.  I can’t call myself a huge fan, but I much enjoyed his work as Bill.  RIP.
  • Hey, how about some ice cream that melts into Jell-O pudding (hat tip, Scott Roberts) instead of a drippy mess?  Yeah, I’m not so sure about that.  Ice cream is supposed to melt.  It’s its nature.  Ice cream that does not melt is not ice cream.
  • Can you believe it’s been 20 years since the protest and massacre in Tiananmen Square?  Slate.com has a wonderful gallery of images.  It’s a shame we can’t measure more progress.
  • Ever wondered why conservatives are so mean?  Watch this video (hat tip, Saintseester).
  • I think I have more hope for peace in the Middle East (and I have essentially none) than I do for civil discourse on abortion in my lifetime.  The murder of George Tiller was tragic and obviously unhelpful, but honestly, it’s not like it degraded the quality of the “conversation” significantly.
  • While we’re talking about political content, the number of Obama posts around here lately isn’t working for me.  It’s no secret I’m deeply dissatisfied with the direction of the country, but anymore, blogging about it the way I have been makes my good mood bad and my bad mood worse.  I’m going to move toward decreasing the frequency, and inverting the constituent percentages of substance and cheap red meat.  We’ll see how it goes.

  1. Greg: Good show. I’ll write a similar letter this weekend.

‘seester: Chapala on County Line is excellent. Particularly recommended are the burrito caliente and fajitas jalisco.

  2. Mmmmm…Mexican! I’m ready to try a new place since we’re not fans of Casa Blanca and Rosie’s is getting old.

  3. Tried that place on Brown’s Ferry and Mooresville? I thought it looked nice, but might be one of the worst places in the world for a restaurant?

  4. For authentic Mexican try La Michohchno located on the SW corner of University and Pulaski Pike. Small mom and pop type place. Rarely crowded. Great food at a fair price.

  5. azn8tive: I’ve finally found a couple of things I can eat and enjoy at Rosie’s, but by and large I’m not a fan. We love Chapala, and consistently have a good time at Bandito as well, despite external reports of occasionally spotty service. The lunch buffet at La Alameda is worthy.

BamaDan: Yup, we ate there. The food was fine, calling no significant attention to itself in either direction. However, I have a moderate amount of omnipresent trouble with the concept of a dry Mexican restaurant for dinner, and it’s not like it’s convenient to the arsenal or Research Park for lunch, gnome sane?

Lee: I keep meaning to try that place and haven’t yet. Genuine Mexican people, both of my direct and indirect acquaintance, tell me that’s as good as it gets in the Huntsville area.
