Thursday miscellanea #378

  • God be with the friends and family of Captain Jeff Kuss, the Blue Angels pilot who lost his life this afternoon in Smyrna, Tennessee.
  • This will be the extent of my commentary on the boy and the gorilla.
  • I am dry-running a bit this week planning to go low-carb next week. Breakfast and lunch will not be a problem for me, but dinner could be challenging if I’m not ready with some killer plays. Southern Plate to the rescue.
  • My public admission of dining and dashing as a high school kid at Terry’s Pizza has led me to volunteer periodically at Manna House. (Just twice so far, but I’m anticipating getting by several more times this summer.) I’m enjoying the people there, and it’s fun to visit with MariBeth a bit while we serve.
  • Art Briles has a statement on what’s gone down so far. I certainly would like it if we had fewer examples of “contrition” precisely coinciding with exposure.
  • In a very real way, I finally got my “dating legs” when I learned to process rejection with slightly irrational rationalization. My ego would tell me a story of which my brain would be very critical. But it was plausible, so it was enough. She’s intimidated by my intellect. She’s afraid to be with me because she’s afraid of losing me. Like that? I don’t think I acted like that, but it’s amazing what it did for my self-confidence. My fear of rejection was compartmentalized. Debating whether there’s a larger post in it. I never really believed it, but it certainly was effective.
  • I am vaguely aware of NBA and NHL finals.
  • The Amazon.com Fire HD tablets the family got for Christmas 2012 have been some of the most ridiculously impressive devices I’ve ever seen. Today, they look and perform as new. If the current $49.99 offerings are half as good, they’re a steal.

  1. Consider numbering these for easy reference. 🙂

About your dating legs – fun topic. You said you never really believed yourself, and I believe that! Just giving credence to possibilities other than “You suck” as a reason for having been rejected can do the trick. Healthy, no? It was healthy for you….and it was healthy for me. 🙂 But I never put it in words or even thoughts.

I think there is a bigger post here.

BTW – You are emotionally healthy enough to know that I wasn’t actually saying that you suck, but the words ‘you suck’ pretty well sum up what we feel upon rejection, in our teen years.

    • Absolutely astonishing any of us ever manage to have meaningful long-term relationships, as emotionally clumsy as we are while we’re figuring out how to be grown-ups! 😀
