Thursday miscellanea #363

  • Glenn Frey’s death at 67 continues an unusually brutal early 2016 when it comes to celebrities passing away. I’m sorry he’s gone, but it’s of limited personal impact. I’m pretty much permanently burned out on The Eagles’ music, and I believe the sociocultural significance (beyond that of a very successful rock band) some seem so desperate to assign them is overblown. Frey’s solo music for Miami Vice is the more direct connection to my mosaic, and even that is minor.
  • We’re now spending more money at Aldi than at Publix. Nearly universally, things are considerably less expensive. In terms of quality, more than half of the products we’ve tried are indistinguishable from national name brands, and nearly all of the rest are almost as good for half the price (or a little more). We’ve only tried a couple of things we won’t get again.
  • In other Madison-area grocery store happenings, it seems we’re getting a Fresh Market in the old Star Market location on 72.
  • It’s a lot harder to peel a hard-boiled egg while you’re driving than you think.
  • Now pulling for the Broncos, and then the Cardinals. If Super Bowl 50 is Patriots vs. Panthers, I may not even bother with it. It’s a real shame the Packers tainted those miracle passes by losing nearly immediately in overtime.
  • I have a restaurant review, a grocery item review, and a consumer goods review all coming out very shortly. Watch for them.
  • Supposed weather uncertainty tomorrow night as I type. Smells like another whiff to me.

    • Dave, when Cam Newton acts ugly, he acts so ugly that I enjoy the thought of him getting some comeuppance. Plenty of NFL stars find a way to be cocksure without being such jerks.

Newton needs Richard Sherman lessons. 🙂

      • Understood. Just to play devil’s advocate…if he had worn a Crimson uniform in college would you be able to overlook some of his antics. Admittedly, his antics don’t bother me as much since he wore blue and orange.

        • Really, truly, I would be calling him on the carpet if he were an Alabama alumnus.

There’s a certain baseline level of bad sportsmanship that we’ve just come to expect, and mostly accept. The first down flourishes, the Superman gestures? That’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about things specifically intended to make people feel bad, like ripping that Green Bay poster down, or actively and sustainedly taunting an opponent’s fans. That’s just nasty, and screw him.

You’d see a BoWilliams.com post called An Open Letter to AJ McCarron or somesuch, if it were my guy.

        • Fair enough! I guess I really do pay more attention to the “on field” stuff rather than the other negative things detracting from the game (i.e. his described behavior). This is just one of the many reasons I like the college game better than the NFL.

I already knew what your response would be 🙂

  1. Did you know Madison is getting not just one new Kroger, but two!?! The first is the one moving from Hughes to Wall Triana. The second is on the corner of 72 and County Line. That’ll make 3 relatively new Krogers all within, at most, a 10 minute drive of my house.

    • Dude, there is no vacancy at 72 and County Line. Mapco Marts NE and SE; new strip mall SW; another gas station NW. Where is the Kroger going?

      Reply
      • It’s going behind the Mapco. Kroger also bought the little bar next to Mapco for demolition. The bar has a sign out front that their last business day is 1/31.

        • Oooooooh that makes sense. Gotcha. Thanks for the info.

I’m not a big Kroger fan, but they did have summer savory when I needed it oncet.
