Thursday miscellanea #361

  • When I was in the tenth grade, Mr. Bennett, my geometry teacher, made the entire class memorize the squares of 1 through 25. That’s how I know off the top of my head that 19² is 361. And it’s amazing how often knowing those squares by heart has come in handy.
  • “Is it bigger than a breadbox?” This entered the vernacular when Steve Allen habitually asked it on What’s My Line? over 60 years ago. Did you know that?
  • Is it now cool to drive around without your headlights on when they’re clearly needed? Is that what I’m witnessing? Or maybe it’s a macho thing? “Headlights are for sissies”?
  • We’re all having a really good time with smoothies for breakfast. I peeled a grapefruit and put the whole thing in there this morning, with a little spinach and flaxseed. I liked it, but I doubt anyone else in the family would have. It was definitely tart. I loved how juicy it was, though. No additional liquid was necessary.
  • Well, the Packers and the Bengals are the only teams I’ll actively pull for in the playoffs. I guess after that, it’s pulling against the Panthers, Patriots, and Steelers.
  • Oh, and I guess there’s some other football game Monday night. I’ll be on media blackout for a lot of the first half. I can’t start watching until about 8:30.
  • There are low 20s in the forecast this weekend. Guess I better finally close my crawlspace vents!
