Thursday miscellanea #309

  • If the current forecast is accurate, then we might see 50 degrees on Saturday, and that’s as warm as it gets for a good while. If you don’t have your sweaters and coats down yet, now is the time.
  • The new Star Wars film is officially subtitled The Force Awakens. This is getting razzed from many corners, but answer me this: which of the extant Star Wars movies has a great subtitle? Simmer down, grousers. The name is well within tolerance.
  • Not talking any trash on the game this week. I know lots of nice State people. Ought to be a good one.
  • Apparently there is some butt shot of Kim Kardashian or something? Wouldn’t recognize either side of her, I’m pretty sure. You can systematically ignore the worst of pop culture. I’m testimony to that.
  • A little research reveals that the seafood market we used last week delivers. Maybe we need to try our Christmas Eve tradition with royal reds this year.
  • Just read that Robin Williams was suffering from Lewy body dementia when he died. Seems he was headed for tragedy no matter what, sad to say.
  • Watch for an exciting end-of-year selection at Alabamians Can Read.

  1. I don’t see why anyone would get upset by that Star Wars title. Unless it was something like “The Rebirth of Jar Jar”, there’s really no complaining to be done. I expect J.J. will do a fine job of it, but folks need to just sit back and wait.

This weekend is one of the few football weekends I’m actually excited about. It’ll be a good game (hopefully). I’m impressed that Mississippi State has managed to be the underdog while ranked #1. I don’t know the stats on that, but I can’t imagine that’s been the case at any point for the last number of years.

That’s ok, I like pulling for underdogs anyway. It makes it that much more exciting. I’ll be sitting in a wedding while the game’s on too… I might just be that guy…

    Good luck neighbors!

Also, since Ole Miss has the weekend off… perhaps they could use the spare time to go to hell.

    • I didn’t get the general panic about Disney buying Star Wars, either. The sentiment was like “now they’ll screw it all up!” Uh, no. I think it’s the best thing that could have happened to the franchise. Uh, folks? Disney is a rather good caretaker of things that make a lot of money.

I’m looking forward to the game. I remember State beating us twice in a row. I also remember State ending Coach Bryant’s win streak in 1980, believe it or not. That was the AFLAC trivia question several years ago and I sounded like a savant rattling off the details of the game when it was asked. 🙂

  2. Speaking of ignoring pop culture, there’s a phone ad with some actor saying loudly, “So this isn’t just for celebrities, this is for everyone?” I have no idea who he is, but I think I’m supposed to.

    • And here’s the part where I sheepishly admit I love those commercials, because I think “Lily” is great. Her real name is Milana Vayntrub, and she’s hilarious.
