Thursday miscellanea #308

  • What the hell is all of this chocolate doing in the house? Get thee behind me. Out out, damned spot.
  • My very first favorite song was Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy.” He has just released his final single, acknowledging his love and his Alzheimer’s, called “I’m Not Gonna Miss You.” It’s beautiful and horrible. It’s totally different thematically, but I am reminded of Johnny Cash’s “Hurt.” I also can’t avoid thinking that of all my earthly wishes, that Lea won’t deal with me like this is near the top.
  • Thank you, Auburn, for dealing Ole Miss its second loss and putting Alabama back in control of its destiny. Right this second I honestly couldn’t say whether I think the 2014 Tide is a championship team, but I’m gratified for it to again be totally up to us. Hoping for good things in that bog night after tomorrow.
  • Golden Age NASCAR fans, Jim Sauter died last week. RIP.
  • This has become a very sports-heavy Thursday miscellanea. Hope I haven’t alienated anyone. If so, simply bring your dissatisfaction to my attention and your purchase price shall be cheerfully refunded.
  • I now feel comfortable calling myself a “longtime contributor” at Rocket City Mom. I have a column called Arsenic & Old Spice, and I also do restaurant reviews. Come read me.
  • You also need to come see me and ‘seester at Alabamians Can Read.

  1. I wore out an 8-track tape with the best of Glen Campbell – Wichita Lineman, Gentle on My Mind, By the Time I Get to Phoenix, etc.

    • Cool. I had 45s. One of my favorites besides “Rhinestone Cowboy” was the B-side of “Country Boy,” which was called “Record Collector’s Dream.”

  2. “Southern Nights” came on my XM radio a couple of days ago. I spent a few moments enjoying the young, vibrant Glen Campbell. It was nice.

My granddad (82) is dealing with Alzheimer’s, and I can tell you that it is very, very hard on the caregiver (my mom). She’s aged more in the last 3 years than in the previous 23. So unfair to everyone involved.
