Thursday miscellanea #290

  • I am taking July off from Rocket City Mom to recharge a bit. Go read my Stanlieo’s review, and watch for the return of Arsenic & Old Spice on Friday, August 8. Thank you for following what I write there, and for your kind words and encouragement. Rocket City Mom is a killer site, and I’m proud of my association.
  • Saw yesterday that Kobra and the Lotus was added to the Kiss/Def Leppard ticket. Had never heard of them, but I certainly have now. This is a straight-ahead, hit-you-hard heavy metal band. Having a blast with their albums. If you’re catching this tour, do yourself a favor and check this band out. I’m looking forward to their set.
  • OK, I’m following the World Cup. No way around it. Enjoyed the USA-Portugal match on Sunday, and I’m looking forward to the USA-Germany match today. I have unkind things to say about the clock rules, but I haven’t decided whether I care enough to commit a BoWilliams.com post. We’ll see.
  • Lea’s getting a new car next year, and I’ve started poking around. I am amazed at the level of feature creep that has occurred since I last shopped new/near-new vehicles. Middle-of-the-road family sedans and SUVs contain equipment/features that were all but unthinkable in full-up luxury cars ten years ago.
  • Texas de Brazil is coming to Bridge Street this fall, in the so-far-chronically-ill-fated southeast-of-Monaco restaurant location. It looks like something I want to try. The Tavern was a favorite restaurant in that location, and I was disappointed and surprised when it folded.
  • Dad, the boys, and I are planning our sinkhole run to the National Corvette Museum. They’re looking into keeping part of it permanently. I think that would be cool, if they can get it worked out. There are humidity issues to solve.
  • For my entire adult life, I’ve purchased cheap sunglasses. Trying out my first pair up the scale, when they arrive. We’ll see.

  1. I suppose I’ll have to follow soccer now that the College World Series is complete. I used to find the soccer match time weird, but it’s the way the match is run, so I’ve gotten used to it. I still wish they’d amend the way they do it and keep a running total somewhere of the stop time the refs are keeping on the field. Even an approximation would be helpful.

    • It changes the entire character of the game. The clock expired in the USA-Portugal game, and the ref said “um, yeah, five more minutes.” That was the difference between a USA win and the tie that happened.

I think you stop the clock for significant injuries or water breaks or whatever, and do away with added time. Or, I think you add time halfway through the period. Adding it at the end of the period is incredibly distorting.

  2. The clock is something one gets used to the more you watch/play soccer. The refs are trying their best to ensure that 45 minutes of actual playing time is achieved. As I stood in the stands of Manaus for the Portugal game I was shocked that 5 minutes was added on, but admittedly I thought that 3-4 minutes would be there for sure. Americans are just not used to a clock that stops in sports and the rest of the world is confused by how often the clock stops for our football.
