Thursday miscellanea #258

  • Nathan, who will be 11.956 years old on Halloween, has decided he’s too old to trick-or-treat. Fair enough, my friend. So he will help me hand out candy instead. And the House of 1000 Corpses tradition dies.
  • In other rated R news, I have persuaded Lea that Nathan is old enough to handle Alien, which he’s been begging me to watch since he asked me at 8: “Dad, how scary is it?” To which I answered: “Son, you’ll never be the same.” My dad let me watch it with him at 9, and yeah, that was rather warping. I think Nathan will get hit viscerally, but he’s equipped to enjoy it more than be sustainedly terrified by it. I’m looking forward to watching it with him.
  • I think Sigourney Weaver is totally awesome and one of the most attractive women in the world, and that Alien cemented her as a star may be some part of its appeal for me. I won’t deny that. If we were picking movie heroes to be on our side in a real conflict, Ellen Ripley would beat out a bunch of others.
  • I have been learning to use Adobe Captivate all week, and I’m impressed. This is powerful and well-designed software. I’m also impressed with our instructor, who is smart and engaging. I recommend Penny highly.
  • As I type, the forecast low tomorrow night is 28 degrees. I’m highly interested in keeping the heat off, but that number may be low enough to test my resolve, particularly if it doesn’t get any warmer than it’s supposed to during the day tomorrow. We’ll see.
  • It’s Tennessee week. Coach Saban has never lost to Tennessee. I expect that to remain true after this weekend.
  • We’re less than a month out from Xbox One, and I don’t feel the slightest purchase pressure. I say again: until I have to have one to play a Halo game, I don’t see it landing at my house.
  • The Dining Dragon just published a highly favorable review of Viet Sandwich, which kicks it way up my list of potential destinations.

  1. Speaking of video games, I need some recommendations from you on Xbox rated M games for an 11 yr old boy. Nothing too realistically violent. But I know he’s playing some M games at his friends’ houses, so I’m trying to loosen up a bit about it.

    • Jenny, we’ve approved all of the Halo games at that age. They’re exceptionally crafted, and green alien blood is not red human blood. Onward.

The Gears of War series is pretty gory. Need to be 12 at least.

No Call of Duty games for a while. No BioShock games for a while. Maybe 14?

No Grand Theft Auto games until 18. Powerfully fun, but morally bankrupt. I’m not throwing that word around casually.
