Thursday miscellanea #254

  • Glad to finally get most of that printer ink off my fingers. Call me officially burned by cheap knockoff ink cartridges. FYI: nothing works well, but abrasion works the best.
  • Saturday at 5:30 would be a great time to see a complete game from Alabama. I’m delighted to be 3-0, but I have dreams of a three-peat on hold at the moment. Oregon, LSU, or Georgia would beat us this weekend. Stanford would be a squeaker. Clemson would have a shot.
  • My Rocket City Mom review of Anaheim Chili appeared on Monday. I’ve already been twice this week. May go again tomorrow and finally try the half-smoke. Scott promises to look seriously at a Madison or Research Park area expansion “when this store stops scaring me every month,” so get yourself in there to one of Huntsville’s best independently-owned eateries. I’d love an Anaheim Chili that wasn’t an hour round-trip from my house.
  • I saw a black 2014 Mazda 6 in the metal earlier this week, and it’s the most gorgeous mass-market sedan of the past 30 years. It looks like it costs twice what it does. If I were in the market for a reasonably-priced family car, I’d go drive one of those first. Stylistically, the bar is definitely raised. Nissan? Toyota? Honda? Hyundai? Whatcha got?
  • (I still don’t like cars with a single bank of cylinders having two exhaust pipes, though. Form should follow function. Symmetry is always less important than that. Best manifestation of such? Check out the gun and front landing gear of an A-10.)
  • Enjoyed Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. with the boys on Tuesday night. If I can convince them that we need to time-slip it 20 minutes with the DVR so we can avoid commercials, I might watch it regularly with them. Many of you know I maintain a carefully-cultivated avoidance of serial television, so this is significant.
  • Locals, you know where Lady Ann Lake is? Down Zierdt Road, between Edgewater and Sun Lake? Did you know there were once detailed plans for a major theme/amusement park there called Space City?
  • Three installments left in my marriage series. One of them is about sex. Stay tuned.

  1. If Scott could land a spot at the new development going up just outside gate 9, he’d corner a significant amount of the research park lunch market. If said location could handle lunch traffic like Cricket’s can, I suspect he’d have more trouble finding supplies than anything at that point.

The Mazda 6 looks very Ford Fusion-y. That’s not a bad thing either, and that’s likely partially be design right? Aren’t Ford and Mazda sister companies for a while now? I’ve been quite impressed with Ford’s willingness to try and think outside the box as compared to a lot of companies. The new Ford Fusion police cruisers look darn intimidating too.

  2. Stephenie, I wouldn’t mind watching on Wednesday, but then the boys couldn’t talk about it at school the next day. 🙂 It’s OK. DVRing it and starting at 7:20 should enable us to fast-forward all the commercials.

Miria, I’d have never guessed that looking at the two cars. The Sonata is a pretty mass-market sedan too, as well as Alabama-built!

Tahm, Anaheim Chili at Gate 9 would be amazing, wouldn’t it? 🙂

Ford and Mazda divorced a few years ago. I don’t think the Fusion and the 6 are architecturally related, though the respective design teams obviously solved a lot of problems in similar ways. The Ford Police Interceptor is Taurus-based.

  3. I haven’t felt the urge t owatch new episodes of serial television in some time, but I may be turning that corner soon, too. I also liked S.H.I.E.L.D., and I’ve been watching syndicated reruns of NCIS for quite some time, so I DVRed the season premiere last Tuesday night and watched it earlier today. I’d recommend the series highly.

  4. Hey, Falcon! Good to “see” you. Hope all is well. I liked your videos.

I appreciate the recommendation, but understand I’m not looking for something to watch. I think there are literally two dozen shows out there I could go watch and enjoy, with most of them available “at no additional charge” on Netflix. I don’t want the monkey on my back. I’m delighted to be unencumbered in that way. Making an exception for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. appeals to me because of the connection with the boys.

‘seester, we’ll see. I’m genuinely curious. I feel like this game cements the tone, good or bad.

And I get that it’s home, but you’re much more of a Starkville chick than an Oxford one.

  5. Neither Oxford nor Starkville are home. Jackson was home. My grandfather and uncle are alums of Ole Miss. Many of my besties from high school are alums of State.

When I was growing up, and granddad was bringing me to football games nearly every weekend, State and Ole Miss played a significant number of their “home” games in Jackson, including the Egg Bowl. It was so much fun. Eventually, they stopped, and I understand why it makes more sense to envelope those traditions back on campus, but I miss it, and old habits die hard.

One of my best memories was the ’80 game between State and AL. Such a defensive struggle!

  6. I knew you were from Jackson. I meant that Mississippi was home, and that you seemed culturally more Starkville than Oxford to me. That is a compliment.

Mississippi State 6, #1 Alabama 3, ending a 28-game Tide win streak. I remember it well.

  7. I realized after the fact what you meant! Culturally, I’m dual personalities. I can cotillion with the best of them when I have to. I would have the silver candelabra at my tailgates but the unladylike words would come out of my mouth at the actual game.

    Is it game time, yet?
