Thursday miscellanea #226

  • I finally got by church early enough last night to be able to hear a bit of both boys’ piano lessons.  They’re doing wonderfully.  I’m so proud of them!
  • Alabama kicks off against Virginia Tech Saturday, August 31, at 4:30 pm CDT.
  • Found a graphics card that will enable me to play Star Wars: The Old Republic smoothly and hook up both monitors to my main box for $35.  Score.
  • Accidentally ordered a cup of chili with both ground beef and chorizo on the Tuesday trip to Anaheim Chili.  That makes two all-vegetarian days on deck as penance.  It’s going to be a challenge for a carnivore like me to script six interesting vegetarian meals.  I don’t need to slip anymore.
  • Speaking of, I had some Mellow Mushroom mega-veggie pizza last night.  I didn’t know it had tofu on it, though I accommodated it well.
  • Had two pints of draft Sierra Nevada Southern Hemisphere Harvest Fresh Hop Ale (whew!).  It was quite good—everything I’ve ever had from this brewery has been—but Torpedo is still my favorite.
  • RIP, Bonnie Franklin.  Can’t think of her without thinking of this post (PG-13).
  • I was thinking about a googolplex, which is 10 to the “googolth” power.  (A googol is 1 followed by 100 zeroes, or 10, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000, 000.)  But I read yesterday that Carl Sagan noted that to write a googolplex in standard form (1000000000…) would be impossible, because it would require more space than the known universe provides.  That’s one damned big number.

  1. My twin and I both played SWTOR when it came out. We were really pumped about it. It ended up disappointing us quite a bit. If you’re looking for mmorpg action, I recommend Guild Wars 2 of which one big plus is no monthly subscription.

If you’re looking for other games, see me or my twin in person.

  2. Tahm, this is quite literally the first MMORPG experience I’ve ever had (and I really haven’t had it yet; only played it for the few minutes it took me to figure out I needed a graphics card). And, I was a big, big fan of Knights of the Old Republic and Knights of the Old Republic II on the Xbox 360. So, we’ll see. I want to give it an honest go.

  3. One vegetarian meal for you – chop various vegetables into bite-size pieces. I usually have onion, carrot, red potato, and small turnips, will occasionally throw in parsnips. I would throw in squash and zucchini, but I’m the only one who likes them. Toss with one or two tablespoons of olive oil, spread in a roasting pan, sprinkle with salt and pepper. Roast at 475 degrees for 20-30 minutes, stirring every 10 minutes. Dump into a soup pot with a large can of diced tomatoes, two cans of V8 juice, and bay leaf. Can also add rosemary, basil, or Italian seasoning. Once this comes to a boil and all the vegetables are tender, serve.
