Thursday miscellanea #187

  • Looking forward to giving the air conditioner a break over the next few days.  It’s likely to be the last one for a while.
  • Current top of the Pandora heap for me is Missing Persons Radio.
  • I just caught all of Roll Tide/War Eagle for the first time last night.  You know, they make these shows for everyone else.  When you live here, this passion is no more remarkable than the grass or the sky.  That’s most of why we think you fans in other places are just precious when you start wondering aloud about what the most intense rivalry in sports might be.
  • Outlook Express is such crap.  It’s technically flimsy and not at all intuitive to use.  I think with today’s malfunction Dad’s headed all the way onto Thunderbird, which he’s already using on his other laptop.  (Yes, I know:  “it’s about time,” but when something works for you, what’s the motivation to change it?  I can sympathize with that.  I still have this.)
  • Recently I was discussing Hall & Oates with a friend, and began reflecting on how deceptive memories of their heyday are.  You think they had five hits or so.  They really had closer to two dozen.
  • I see Wal-Mart is trying to lure me back into their retail cesspool with steaks, and I really must be right down the middle of the targeted demographic, because I don’t watch a lot of television and I see that commercial all the time.  I’ll say the same thing I always say:  Wal-Mart, you lost me because visiting your store consistently makes me miserable.  Until that changes, I don’t care what’s in there.  Got it?
  • The tablet is fun to have around for this and that, but as a primary tool it’s just not taking for me.  For what I do (particularly the writing), I’d just rather have a netbook.  The main thing I do on my Kindle Fire is read National Review and Commentary, and I like it for that because I don’t have the paper to get rid of.
  • Today (well, late this afternoon), Lea and I will have been married 15 years.  She is a phenomenal wife and mother, and I am tremendously blessed by our union every day.  I love you, Lea!

  1. The snow was so heavy on the accused idiot who poisoned the trees, that it left a distaste. So much so, that’s the only memory I have of the broadcast. Even the kids agreed it was a terrible documentary.

  2. My husband & I are huge H&O fans. I love to torture my kids by making them listen to it in the car. The just don’t seem to get it when I explain to them that this is *real* music – as opposed to that Katy Perry/Justin Bieber crap they like.

I like my Kindle Fire for reading (indoors only – glare is too bad for outdoors), playing Words with Friends, and doing a little web surfing. It’s really not suitable for much else, but considering the price, I’m quite happy with it.

Congrats on the anniversary! You and Lea are fantastic people, and I’m glad you found each other.

  3. Don’t you believe the WM hype about their steaks, Bo. I will not buy meat there. A year, year & 1/2 ago, I bought some GORGEOUS looking steaks from WM…I was a little concerned that the red seemed to leach out of them onto the paper towels I had set them on. hard to really explain, but it looked like when you put the tip of a magic marker onto a paper towel and the paper towel wicks up the color…
Anyway, we grilled the steaks, and they looked lovely. They tasted like…meh.

  4. Bo, you’re the first person I’ve found that also uses the most amazing universal remotes in the world. I’ve had one of these: http://www.universalremote.com/products/residential/remotes/mx-500 for years. I’ve had it for at least 5 years, probably a bit longer and have had no issue with it. It’s worked like a champ! It will control anything I task it with, and it’s a wonder to program exactly the way I want it to.

I also have one that’s similar to this http://www.universalremote.com/products/discontinued/retail/urc-200 but I don’t use it anymore for a couple of reasons. I don’t have need for it, and it dies a lot quicker because it always uses the RF transmitter even if you don’t need it. There’s no option to turn off the RF unfortunately. Other than those two issues, it worked just as well as my MX-500.

    Congrats on the anniversary!!

  5. Hall & Oates…Wow. I will never, EVER forget the time (only time?) they were the musical guest on SNL. Oh. My. God. They were so awful I can’t even begin to explain. I was shocked!! I guess that was the first time I’d heard or really paid attention to what the popular groups really sounded like “live.” And I loved H&O. They sucked so so so bad. But I still love’em.

  6. ‘seester, that was indeed very unfortunate. I really, really hope the trees make it.

Jenny, I missed them at Big Spring Jam because they were the Sunday night main attraction, which I never catch because of the synchronized departing traffic. I had a Hall & Oates button when I was 10. 🙂 And thank you for your very kind words. She’s amazing. I’m humbled.

Marianne, I have no problem believing that whatsoever. I’m building up a pretty good record again. I haven’t been in a Wal-Mart since July 29, 2010 in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. And thank you!

Tahm, aren’t they amazing “clickers”? I still keep an XP box with a serial port around almost solely to deal with my remote. I’m not looking forward to replacing it. And thank you! We’re very blessed.

Terri, as it happens I think the first time I heard pretty terrible live music was on Saturday Night Live. 🙂
