Thursday miscellanea #183

  • Best shot at a late freeze has come and gone.  We bottomed out at 36 °F even here; looks like official for the area was a degree or so lower.
  • The University of Arkansas has fired Bobby Petrino for lacking blood sufficient to run his brain and his penis at the same time.  He’s probably too good to go die somewhere bad a la Mike Price, so I’m sure we’ll see him again somewhere after the contrition tour.
  • Did Tyrannosaurus rex have feathers?  There is evidence in that direction.
  • I turned 41 yesterday.  Finally got to use that “Delta Dawn”-themed Facebook status I’d been sitting on.  Lea and the boys got me the Vizio tablet.  Woohoo!  Thanks, guys!  It’ll be here next week.
  • I’ve lost weight seven weeks in a row, but the first part of this week has been rough.  Thankfully, I’m only up a pound as I type.  That’s about 90 hours to yank it a pound and a half the other way.  That’s doable.  (Glad I got grilled catfish last night and not something worse.)
  • The centennial of the sinking of Titanic is Saturday.  I can remember being in the fifth grade and being enthralled reading A Night To Remember.  Of course, it was always a subject of great interest, but it was still something of a niche topic during my childhood.  Now we have millions of “experts.”  I suppose that’s James Cameron’s fault.
  • I miss having Ozzy Osbourne largely to myself, too.  Thanks to that stupid TV show, the dominant image of Ozzy now is of a doddering old man who looks as likely to wet himself as anything else.  There’s a lot to be said for preserving the mystery.
  • Spied this cool list of 100 foods to eat before you die on Facebook, but I’m not a big fan of dealing with all of their platform stuff, so here’s another link to it.  I’ve had 36 of them, based on a quick count.

  1. I had 62 on that list. I just cannot believe I am more of an adventurous eater than you, but perhaps living in south Louisiana gives us a slight edge as several of the weird foods on the list were local delicacies. I will never try a few of the other items, however… I heard Kangaroo tastes like squirrel.

  2. I’ve been waiting for you to comment on Petrino. He burned the NFL bridge, so we won’t see him there. I doubt his ego would allow him to take anything but a head coaching job. If we see him again then it will be a long time from now and likely at a I-AA (or FCS or whatever you call it) school a la Terry Bowden at UNA. Based on how tarnished his reputation is he probably can’t even get a TV gig. Thoughts?

  3. ‘seester, I suspect opportunity has indeed had a lot to do with it.

Dave, you’re leaving out one thing in your analysis: Petrino is an unambiguous winner. He’ll be around. I could see him eventually topping out at a mid-tier school in an AQ conference.

Plus, I mean, isn’t monogamy the alternative lifestyle anymore?

  4. Points well taken. I just think it will be years before we hear about him coaching again. You may be right about the AQ school, although most “relevant” AQ schools are joining “real” conferences…TCU, etc. Wonder where he could go? Utah may be a good fit for him 🙂

  5. Ever see the movie _A Night To Remember_? Excellent flick. Cameron’s love affair with deep-water subs is ok, but he was nowhere near the depth and overall human emotion as that flick.

Kate Winslet looks the heet tho.
