Home from Camp McDowell

Camp McDowell is an Episcopal camp and “environmental learning center” near Nauvoo, Alabama.  The gifted program at Nathan’s school makes a trip there every year, and I think most of his class went.  We just got back earlier this afternoon (I went along as a chaperone).  It’s the highlight of the year for the program, and plus BamaDan and his oldest went two years ago, so Nate’s been hearing for some time about how cool it is.

Guess what?  It is cool.  Nathan told me on the way back that it was one of the best times he’d ever had, and all of my expectations were exceeded as well.  Something called an “environmental learning center” could be obnoxiously political.  Instead, I was delighted to discover that all of the lessons were based on principles of conservation and stewardship any thinking person could get behind.  All of the counselors are top-notch.  The property is gorgeous.  Even the food should have been a B- or C+; instead it was a solid B+.

In fact, the only glitch in the entire stay was that I was supposed to be watching over a cabin of little boys with two other dads.  Instead, they threw us in a rectangular room with a bunch of spider monkeys hopped up on Red Bull.

Not sure where the breakdown was there.

I’ll have to call it right there for the evening.  It’s only 9, but I’m crashing.  More later (with photos, even).
