Thursday miscellanea #170

  • “Temperatures falling through the 30s.”  All right!  Good stuff.
  • I don’t have a lot to say about the BCS championship.  What is there to do but smile?  Though I knew Alabama had a reasonable shot at winning, the total dominance was a delightful surprise.  Also, thanks largely to the SEC-on-SEC title game as the final straw, it looks very much as if we’re going to get a playoff of some sort beginning with the 2014 season.
  • On an NFL note, one of the nastiest, most belligerent, most mean-spirited atheists I know—I mean, this guy marinates in hatred—is a huge Steelers fan. I am (just a little) ashamed to admit that Tim Tebow’s OT 80-yard TD pass to beat them gave me a little extra lift because I knew how much he couldn’t stand such an outspoken Christian sticking it to his boys.  Hi, Bob.
  • More stuff I can’t believe anyone likes:  extremely large breast implants; the angry-eyebrowed fifth-generation BMW 5-series; the song “Mr. Bojangles”; runny scrambled eggs; and knee-high socks.
  • Aaron read in his new biology book about how the sperm gets to the egg inside the woman, and that’s how she gets pregnant.  “So when the man and the woman kiss…” he continued to me.  Ack.  And that’s how I came to talk to Aaron about the birds and the bees a little before I had planned to.
  • I am rather underwhelmed by the new “Van Halen” song (and the quotes are for Michael Anthony’s absence).  What say you?
  • Locals:  I have one more major Asian cuisine to bring into my mosaic.  What’s our best Korean restaurant?

  1. 1) /agree
    2) While I didn’t really pull for either team b/c I was satisfied that the SEC would be well represented (though LSU did obviously fail in its showing), I too was delighted in knowing that this championship game, if any, would scream for the need of a new system. I’m curious where you saw the mention of a playoff setup in 2014? I a quick google on my end did not give me anything immediately obvious.
    3) I got nothing. Pro sports are pretty low on my list of interests, mostly because of the absurd amount of money that is involved in what’s supposed to be something people play b/c it’s a sport…
    4) I wouldn’t turn away a 5 series if someone handed me the keys and football (or as the yanks call it, soccer) socks….

    7) The only one I know of is on northbound side of Sparkman just north of 72. It wasn’t amazing but Korean also might not be for me. Vietnamese is more my non-generic asian (aka “Chinese food”) cuisine.

  2. Tahm, we’ve got a few Korean places around. I had a buffet at a place on Jordan once, and I never recovered from grabbing something that I was thinking was a piece of boneless fried chicken, but it was instead some sort of cold produce inside. I couldn’t get over the textural dissonance.

Harold, I might think so if I ever had to stay out in the cold for an extended period. (And welcome!)

  3. Regarding Bullet # 4 – I’d have to disagree with you about the first and last points, but that’s just me.

As far as the new VH song goes, yeah, I’ve heard better, but I’ve also heard a lot worse. What confuses me is the Michael Anthony reference. The band is named “Van Halen,” isn’t it? As long as Alex and Eddie are there… I realize Anthony brought his own distinct energy and personality to the band, but he was the *bassist* fer Pete’s sake! And he wasn’t even a great one, imho. We’re not talking about Billy Sheehan or Geddy Lee or Stu Hamm or John Entwistle, here…

    Just my pair of pennies…

  4. I’m from L.A. and among the cuisine I regularly ate there (and regularly miss now) include Korean and Mexican. Today I drove past Korea House on the way back from hitting a taco truck on Jordan today and I’m kinda sorry I didn’t think that first. Some of the taco trucks in Huntsville are good but this particular one was…meh. The quesadilla (with carne asada) was good but the sopes al pastor was mostly tasteless and full of too much fatty meat.

As for Korean: West End Grill (next to Rideout Road/Bridge Street Town Centre) is partly owned by a Korean and they serve up a very good bulgogi. You have to check their menu though; I’m not sure it’s available every day. I do know it’s always available on Fridays as their Daily Special.

  5. Falcon, I consider Michael Anthony’s background vocal a critical component of the definitive Van Halen sound. List off your favorite VH tracks. I bet he’s all over them.

I was so pleased when he got a few numbers that showcased it on the first Chickenfoot record. (I’m not so impressed with Chickenfoot III.)

Miria, thanks so much. I’ll proceed on those recommendations.

Harold, my first date with my wife was at West End Grill! I’ll definitely check that out. That’s extremely convenient to work too.
