Thursday miscellanea #169

  • I was one for three on my Christmas movies this time around.  Christmas Vacation was the only one I managed.
  • There is nothing the University of Tennessee could do for its football program that would make more sense than calling Phillip Fulmer.
  • When I was Nathan’s age, I couldn’t believe how much my dad forgot.  I certainly understand now.
  • No connection to the previous bullet intended:  I was interested to read that failure to recognize sarcasm may signal dementia.
  • I found a good deal on a Roku 2, and we’re having fun with it so far.  I like streaming Netflix without firing up the Xbox 360.  I also like an easy path to get Amazon Prime videos to my TV.
  • I’m going to see a childhood friend this weekend.  I haven’t seen him in 27 or 28 years.  I’m really looking forward to it.
  • I think that knowing when to relinquish concern is one of the hardest, yet most valuable, things to master.

  1. Hizzoner sez re: Vols football: “Bull. Fulmer had been complacent in his recruiting since 2000. See either ’05 or ’07 seasons for concrete results of that.”

“Add the destruction from the Kiffin experiment. Dooley has a good start. It’s not his fault that his best players were sidelined early on with injuries. It takes more than two seasons to rebuild a football program – it takes at least a student generation.”

“And if the rumors going around are true, he’s got a helluva defensive coordinator coming in. If folks would stand down, stop complaining, and let the man do his job, things will be all right. This instant gratification bs is what’s killing a lot of programs.”

    (I just type. He dictates.)

  2. The rumor is that the new DC will be Randy Shannon, which would be an instant shot in the arm for their defense and recruiting. If it happens, then my prediction is that Dooley will get fired after the 2012 season, and Shannon will be the new Vols HC. They could certainly do worse.

So have a conversation with Fulmer about recruiting. The guy loves UT, and he was fired a year after winning the East and 10 games. (Again.) And I don’t understand any perception of Derek Dooley except one of a nice guy in waaaaaaay over his head.

Dave, we’re up to forecast mid-60s, but it might rain. In such a case, I’m for grabbing an umbrella and walking the ‘hood anyway.

  4. I remember that “Die Hard” is set around Christmastime, but it’s still an action flick to me.

Do you recall that the first (and BEST!) “Lethal Weapon” film was also set during Christmastime?

Not familiar with “Mixed Nuts” at all.

I’ve never been a fan of any of the “Vacation” films (or Chevy Chase in general, for that matter.

(Geez, I’m really sounding like Gerry Rosser (aka TwoBlueDay) here, aren’t I? 🙂 )

The Christmas movies I HAVE to see to get into the spirit are “White Christmas” amd “Scrooged.”

“The bitch hit me with a toaster!” 🙂

  5. Falcon, you have to ratchet the nastiness way up to be mistaken for Gerry. Oh, he’s a great guy, though. Father figure and stuff.

Mixed Nuts is one of mine and Lea’s favorite memories. We saw it at the movies. People were leaving in the middle of it while we were laughing so hard we couldn’t breathe.
