Thursday miscellanea #163

  • I’d be just fine with the (locally mild) events of this week being the extent of our fall severe weather season.
  • Making friends with my Kindle Fire, mostly successfully.  I’m just never going to like onscreen keyboards much, I don’t think.
  • I had my second cavity filled this week.  I remember more smoke and smell the first time around, twelve years ago.  I didn’t miss them.
  • Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary is the original Halo, updated for the Xbox 360.  It includes the ability to switch back and forth between the original and updated graphics at any time during the game except during cutscenes.  This sounded kind of hokey to me pre-release, but now that I’ve experienced it I think it’s really cool.
  • On the way to Nathan’s birthday dinner this week, I saw my first live armadillo in the wild.  (Seen hundreds of dead ones.)
  • I’ve moved past “wouldn’t it be great if” and to “let’s meet on this date” with a close childhood friend for lunch and an extended visit around our old neighborhood.  I’m really looking forward to it.
  • Occasionally we get a mouse or two in the garage when it first gets cold in the fall.  I like regular old mousetraps, because they’re inexpensive and almost always humane.  However, I’m doing battle with a bait-stealing grand champion right now.  I don’t like glue traps, but I’ve had to so escalate.  We’ll see what happens.

  1. I had my own problem with mice a few years ago. I saw one running in the garage but didn’t really get upset about it…what’s one mouse going to do, right? Big mistake! That was a momma mouse and about three weeks later she and her brood had found a way into our inner sanctum. I first discovered it when I reached in the pantry from some cheese crackers and discovered that something had been chewing on one corner of the package. It wasn’t long after that we’d see one running across the floor in the kitchen and disappear behind the cabinets. I didn’t want to be cruel so I got some of traps that catch them alive so you can take them outside and release them. I caught one that way but it was way too slow. Catching one mouse every two weeks wasn’t cutting it. I went from there to the old traditional spring traps but those weren’t working too well either. I reluctantly had to add glue traps to the mix. The glue traps were cruel but very effective. It upset me having to deal with the poor writhing mouse stuck in the glue but I got over it. Total War was the only way to get rid of them.

  2. Robert, that’s exactly right—you can’t let ’em hang around. I’ve never much worried about it, because the way it’s gone I’ve put the trap out in the garage, taken a week or two to catch two or three mice, and that’s the end of it until the next October. This bait-stealer, though, has evaded the snap for far too long.

Not looking forward to dealing with a used glue trap. I’ve decided what I’ll do is drop the whole affair in a zip-lock freezer bag and seal it. That seems quick and effective.

  3. We had a mouse problem a couple of years ago…didn’t know it until I went to get tortillas out of the pantry and the corner was chewed. Anyway…we tried the glue traps, but they didn’t work. Had to resort to glue traps and poison bait. That worked. Hope it gets resolved soon.

I saw my first live armadillo a couple of weeks ago as I was coming out of the gym on the Arsenal. It was having a grand time snuffling through the grass and leaves looking for something to eat. Truly a WEIRD critter!

  4. My father-in-law has to occasionally deal with them, so I’ve seen them at night, looking at us right taunting us as they root around, burrowing into the foundation. I thought they were creepy in the daylight, until I saw one’s eyes reflecting in the porch lights. *ugh*
