Thursday miscellanea #150

  • The protist Naegleria fowleri, aka “the brain-eating amoeba,” is making unfortunate headlines again.  “Rare…but super-tragic,” says Jonathan Yoder at the CDC.  Agreed.
  • Apparently not nearly enough people share my aversion to video that starts on a web page without my explicit request, because it seems like it’s becoming more common.  I think it’s obnoxious.  Is that just me being old?  Is that just one of the things I’m supposed to know might happen when I go to a site anymore?
  • There’s another Saxon album.  I started it yesterday.  Review coming soon.
  • I know it’s healthy, and it’s a better way to freshen your breath than mints or gum, and blah blah blah.  I still think brushing your teeth at work is prissy and ridiculous.
  • Melanie said she hadn’t turned on her netbook since she got her iPad, so I asked her if she wanted to get rid of it.  We did this weird, look-out-for-each-other close friend negotiation where I voluntarily went up and she down, and here I am.  I’m seeing if I can make friends with Joli OS.
  • I haven’t yet read about the Miami scandal in detail, though a Facebook friend of mine is crowing every 15 minutes that two of the assistants named are at Alabama now.  I’m too nice a guy to point out to her that 1) if that means anything, then we must surely also conclude one of them learned his wicked ways on the Plains, where he worked before Da U; and 2) in light of Chizik’s conversation with Julie Roe Lach last month, it still seems a mite soon for any Auburn fan to be squawking and pointing fingers at others.
  • For the first time in my adult life, I have the entire physical fitness train rolling.  I’m doing everything correctly, day in and day out.  Now it’s a matter of making it a lifestyle, both in the interest of reversing 15 years of neglect as best I can and preventing it from happening again.  I’ll start publishing numbers as soon as I’m in different clothes—perhaps week after next.

  1. When you have a few minutes, read the whole Charles Robinson article on the Miami scandal. It is truly salacious. Usually, when a scandal hits the CFB world, most people look at it and say, “Meh. Happens everywhere”. But this one is different. It has everything – a Ponzi scheme, agents, hookers, strip clubs, yachts, jewelry, etc. Makes SMU look like choir boys. Can’t wait to see how the NCAA’s Dept. of Arbitrary and Capricious Punishment handles this one…

  2. I only brush my teeth at work if I’m going to a dentist appt.
    Miami who?
I hate the automatic videos almost as much as I hate those damn flash sidebar things about “going back to school” or “low interest rates” or whatever. Drives me NUTS.
How many steps per day are you walking now? Where did you start?
You’ve give up alcohol then? 🙂

  3. Terri, you need to surf with Firefox with Ad Block Plus installed. It’s like black magic. It’ll make you enjoy surfing again.

My baseline measurement, i.e. I’m making no effort to walk, but just seeing what I do in a typical day, was 3,000. This week was 9,000 per day. Next week is 10,000.

I didn’t give up alcohol, but I’m limiting myself to ten drinks a week, with a maximum of four in one day. That’s working very well.
