Blogging about it has generally been the kiss of death for my weight loss effort—have a look at the related posts below for several stones along the road to hell—but I think this time is different.

No, really different. No, really really really.

I’m up to 10,000 steps per workday. Got there increasing 1,000 steps per workday per week, starting from my baseline of 3,000.
I have made generally sensible changes to my diet—lower fat, higher fiber, complex over simple carbs, and so forth.
I’ve cut alcoholic beverages to 10 per week, with no more than 4 in one day. (That’s mostly to accommodate football. Heh.)
I didn’t relapse on smoking while doing any of this.
I’m 26 lbs. off my all-time high as I type, and will probably see the 260s next week for the first time in I don’t know when (four years or so, at least).
I have officially gone down a waist size this morning. Now I’m in the fattest normally-sized jeans, not the slimmest fat-guy jeans.
XL polo shirts are still months away, but I’m reliably getting into almost every manufacturer’s XXL now.

I have a long way to go, but I certainly do feel good when I turn around to see how far I’ve come. Thanks to all who have encouraged me. I really appreciate it. Follow along to the right if you like.

Well, I suppose Irene still has some havoc to wreak in Canada as I type, but she’s halved her wind speed and doubled her travel speed, so hopefully it’s about over. Thoughts and prayers to all those impacted by wind damage and flooding. I’ve heard from most everyone I know up that way, and they’re all fine. Lots of power out, though. Annoyance overcomes adventure at about twelve hours there. Good luck, folks.

Know what would be marvelous in 2012? A lot of really boring weather.

Laura Ingraham: Can you make a promise right now–this is a really important promise–a pledge on The Laura Ingraham Show, that you will never vacation in Martha’s Vineyard?

Rick Perry: I’m not even sure if I know where it is…

I’ve not spent any more time looking into Rick Perry than I had the last time I mentioned him, which I know really must be bumming out those of you who look to me to know what you should think. Patience, kids. Still months and months to go.

However, Perry certainly is effective at enraging people who are rather comical in an enraged state.

Oh, and everybody? Let’s make a deal. Let’s none of us ever say “liberal enclave” again, okay?

Justin Sollohub, a police officer in my old hometown of Anniston, was shot and killed in the line of duty yesterday. God be with his friends and family.
Looks as if several million folks are going to get an earthquake and a hurricane in less than a week.
Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple yesterday, but sounds like he’s going to hang around. It’ll be interesting to see what effect, if any, this has on the arrogance in Apple’s business model.
It’s almost impossible for a modern vulgar comedy movie to be both funny and an effective morality play. Hall Pass is an excellent manifestation of this assertion. There are a couple of decent laughs, but mostly it’s just tedious.
The only movies of this sort I’ve really enjoyed have been There’s Something About Mary, The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and The Hangover. Honorable mention for Role Models, mostly for Jane Lynch. I think I’m going to stop trying to like them. I’ll give one a shot in the future only if the word-of-mouth is uniformly through the roof.
Did you know that portobello mushrooms are the same species as common/white mushrooms, just more mature? I didn’t until yesterday.
