Thursday miscellanea #147

  • You ever think of all the stuff that just works now, and for which our kids will have no understanding of it being any other way?
  • We had grilled tilapia, rice pilaf, and steamed broccoli for dinner last night.  I loved it.  I just wish getting excited about a meal like this a time or two a week was enough.  Alas, you really need to be excited about it four to six times a week.
  • Speaking of trying not to die 30 years early, I’m up to 6,000 steps daily this week, which is double my starting baseline.  I’m on the way to 10,000.  After next week, I’m going to have to add two or three sustained walks to my week, I think.
  • I ran the Technical Writing Express down to about 0.55 gallons of gasoline yesterday afternoon before filling up.  Nothing like a little extra excitement on the evening commute, eh?  I’m still squeezing an easy 31 mpg out of it, even running the air conditioner often.  No complaints there.
  • Hugh Hefner’s ex-fiancee Crystal Harris reports that sex with him takes “like two seconds”; they only had sex once; and he “doesn’t really take off his clothes” for it.  Given that Calvin Coolidge was president when Hefner was born, is any of this surprising?
  • My work buddy Ken, a Kansas native with an apparently chronic case of wanderlust, is off to Kokomo, Indiana for his next gig.  When I asked him where he wanted me to take him for a farewell lunch, he said “back to Greenbrier” (where we’d been once before).  Good answer, man.  We’ll get you full of top-quality pulled pork and hush puppies before you head north.  Godspeed, sir.  It’s been a pleasure.
  • I have Versus HD as of yesterday, which means I won’t watch another non-HD IndyCar race.  This is a good thing.
  • Ladies and gentlemen, the dryer kills your blue jeans.  Dry one pair in there every laundry cycle so you have some to wear the next day, but air-dry the rest.  They’ll last a lot longer.
  • I’m telling myself we’re on the back side of this scorching summer.  I can feel it.  Can’t you?  Smell college football and burning leaves?  I do.

  1. Cellphones. If Mileena finds out a kid her age doesn’t have one, it’s like she’s found out that they don’t have indoor plumbing. I’ve tried explaining to her that no one except the very, very rich (and “Cannon”…I remember him having one) had them 20 years ago. We got our first one (a bag phone) about 18 years ago. She almost laughed herself sick at the phone in Jake Ryan’s car on 16 Candles.
