Thursday miscellanea #144

  • I am irrationally exuberant about the number 144.  It’s a perfect square, which turns me on anyway, but that it’s the square of a number as special as 12 makes it all the more profound.  It’s a gross.  It’s a dozen dozen.  All of the ins and outs of the 3s and 4s are just glorious.  What a pleasingly divisible number.
  • Wow, I’ve heard from more than one of you seeking my opinion on the Casey Anthony verdict.  Alas, I have not paid nearly enough attention to be outraged.  I just don’t know.  I didn’t listen.  Honestly, for a long time, when I’d see the victim’s photo, I’d think she was that little girl in Europe (Portugal, was it?) with the weird eye.  To hear a couple of you, this is genuinely letting you down.  I apologize.
  • Some botanists in a position to know are explicitly refusing to sign the death warrants of the Toomer’s Corner oaks just yet.  Maybe poisoning redneck idiot guy ran his mouth just a little bit too soon.  Keep your fingers crossed.
  • There’s a Heavy Seas variety pack available at my Publix these days.  It’s worth a go-to, if you want to mix it up from a Samuel Adams Summer Styles or a Flying Dog.
  • I think Nathan must have the most prudish guppies in four counties.  The tank is beautiful, healthy, and there is a lot of water sprite in which fry can hide.  Why are none showing up?
  • I read something unexpected yesterday.  Who do you think holds the record for most consecutive weeks (220) with more than one song on the Billboard charts?  Think about it.  Got a guess?  When you’re ready, here is the answer.
  • I think we’re down to Hamburger:  The Motion Picture as the last bad movie I remember fondly from my adolescence that hasn’t yet made it to DVD.  Come on, folks.  Don’t let Hardbodies show you up.
  • Facebook and Skype!  There can no longer be a shred of doubt; this whole social media thing is beginning to get away from me.  “Regular old” blogs are looking rather quaint anymore, aren’t they?
  • Speaking of, after some considered thought, I’ve significantly changed my blogging approach.  I’ve been doing it “the new way” for about a week now.  I’m hoping the only casually noticeable effect is that the quality of my posts will increase.  (Careful observation would reveal more tangible data.)  Thank you for reading BoWilliams.com.

  1. I give. What is the “new” way? I must not be observant enough.
I was going to guess on the Billboard thing with the obvious of “The Beatles” but that’s too easy I’m sure. 2nd guess would be Elvis. But again, too easy, eh? I’ll have to check the link.

  2. I would’ve guessed the Bee Gees (Saturday Night Fever and all that). (Answer redacted) never crossed my mind.

Re: Casey Anthony – do I think she’s guilty? Yes. Do I think the jury got it right? Absolutely. Our high standards of proof mean that occasionally the guilty go free to make sure that the innocent are not wrongly imprisoned.

  3. New, schmoo. I don’t notice a difference.

I notice that with all this focus on the new Mother of the Year trial, few people have commented on Maj. Hasan potentially facing the death penalty in a military court trial. Not important enough, you think?

  5. Terri, Marianne, Kemtee: it’s regimentation, meant to better channel my energy when it comes to blogging. It may get more noticeable with the passage of time, or it may not. I don’t know.

BamaDan, it’s difficult for me to see myself on Google Plus. I have vague resentment that my Facebook profile has plugged itself into my life to the degree that it has, actually, though benefits still substantially outweigh liabilities to me.
