The Alaska fantasy

Given my ample declarations that I’m living as far north as I ever want to live—partially because of general qualities of populace, but more because of winter—it might surprise you to learn that under certain circumstances, I believe I’d enjoy living in Alaska.

(“Certain circumstances” mostly being I’d have enough money to make dealing with the winter on my terms a reality.)

Really, it’s just an extension of what I’ve said in conversation to some of you about the degree to which I socialize.  I consider inclement weather part of the same equation.  Just call it the level with which I must deal with the outside world.  When I say I don’t care for a harsh winter, what I really mean is I don’t care for being forced to interact with it, and said forcing comes because I have to make a living, dig?

But what if I had the means to close up and say “y’all can have it”?  What if I had 5,000 acres of Alaska wilderness, in the middle of which sat 10,000 square feet of meticulously prepared and maintained space, with all of the necessities and several luxuries, and with triple-redundant utilities?

This is unlikely to ever be a practical option for me.  For one thing, I definitely married the right girl, but I didn’t marry a girl who’d be happy doing that.  For another, to do it like I’d really want to do it, I’ve described something that requires more money than I’m ever likely to see.

It’s interesting how much my inner hermit flares sometimes, though.

  1. Having lived well NORTH of the Mason-Dixon line (think Vikings) for a couple of years as a teen, I have come to the conclusion that this desert rat is NOT cut out for winters where it gets well below zero. While I love snow occasionally, I much prefer living where we get a taste of all four seasons not just two.

You definitely picked well, my friend!

  2. Thanks, AZ. I’ve never lived with real winter, but I’ve visited it on business for a week or so at a time. Yuck.
