Thursday miscellanea #133

  • My father is 67 today.  Happy Birthday, Dad!
  • I just got tricked into answering a solicitation call.  Santa brought us a new telephone that never lets the phone ring for UNKNOWN CALLER or PRIVATE CALLER, which has been great—but it’s made me even less tolerant of any give-me-money calls that do get through.
  • I’ve gotten a little too excited about my country and U.S. state flag counters at the bottom of the page, which count unique visitors by location.  I put them up about a week ago.  The country list will always have its challenges, of course, but I can reasonably expect to get all of the states.  I’m missing nine as I type:  Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Nebraska, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Vermont, West Virginia, and Wyoming.  So tell your friends in those states what an awesome blog I have.
  • Silver touched $41 earlier this week, and is still hanging around there.  Last time I marveled at metal prices, just three years ago, it was $16.
  • Nathan’s aquarium is doing very well, and he’s inspired me to get my 55-gallon going again.  I’ve already spoken with him about how I should get something that can eat his culls.  (Recall that he has guppies.)  I may go African cichlids, but I’m leaning more toward another lionfish.
  • In this bullet I was going to tell you (to share, not to gloat) about a Pulsar alarm chronograph I bought last week for $49 delivered on Amazon.com.  Dark blue dial, silver subdials, bulletproof 7T62 movement.  Bracelet is medium-crappy, but hey, it’s $49, right?  Well, now it’s $100.  So never mind.  (This is not the first time I’ve seen such a huge pricing swing from Amazon.com.  What’s up with that?)
  • I put the mystery memory card in the hand of its owner yesterday afternoon!  Facebook gets the credit.

  1. Good luck on the LionFish 🙂
I am currently without an active tank in the house. The garage has 3 collecting dust tho. Considering a spider, snake or lizard instead of a fish.

  2. Thanks! I’m excited. I figure one big volitans and then a companion…maybe even a tang? anything that wouldn’t fit in his mouth would be fine in a 55. Lionfish are peaceful with their dimensional peers.

Nathan’s tank looks great. Aaron’s excited about one now.

  3. I have family in Idaho. I’ll spread the word! And that is amazing about the memory card. Was the owner appropriately appreciative?

  4. Lee, yes, he was very pleased. I just had to like the odds. I mean, I figure 400 or so of my Facebook friends are Huntsville-area, and…you know?

  5. I sent a link to my friend in Nebraska (where I myself lived for 10 years). Hope that helps you get to your goal 🙂 That’s awesome about the memory card, I’m sure he thought it was gone forever and you probably made his day. As for your tank, I’m trying to figure out how to change from African cichlids back to tropical. I need to rehome my largest one, Frank. He was about 2 inches when I got him, he’s now getting to be filleting size and likes to harass my other guys (what few are left). Someday I’ll find him a new home that wants an only child and put some less aggressive fish back in my tank.

  6. Mirth, our local shop will give you 50% credit for a healthy fish. Perhaps you have one that will do so.

And I got Nebraska today, probably thanks to you! (And Rhode Island too!)
