Watching the last of the snow melt

All of the ice on the deck finally melted today, its longevity an early testimony to the continued cold temperatures, and a latter one to sheer quantity.  I still saw some bits of white in shadowed northern exposures when the sun went down tonight, though as it’ll be well above freezing all night and rain is coming, it’ll all be gone tomorrow.

Eight days is a long, long time for snow on the ground in northern Alabama.

I thought I was going to start another book today, but I’ve got that little depressing dip that always comes with realizing the next book I read almost certainly won’t be as good as the one I just finished, and it was enough to scare me off the idea for the day. (A spectacular movie will do it to me too.)  Speaking of, I DVRed True Grit last week sometime, and will enjoy a “refresher view” tomorrow night ahead of seeing True Grit with BamaDan on Wednesday.

Nathan and I watched Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland on streaming Netflix this afternoon.  It wasn’t a waste of time, but I didn’t think it was great.  It had the usual problem of smashing all of the source material together, too.

The boys go back after ten off days in a row (weekend, all last week for weather, weekend, King holiday) tomorrow.  Do pity the poor dears, won’t you?

  1. Don’t know what you’re into on the reading front…but Nancy just hooked me into a new series…first book is called The Strain. Loved it…already almost finished with its sequel, The Fall. These are written by Del Toro…the guy who directed Pan’s Labrinth (sp?).
Also, one of the best books I have read EVER and certainly my favorite of last year, Water for Elephants…though it might me a tich on the chick side… it is written from a man’s pov. But seriously, it’s a VERY well written book.
Also read I Am Number Four…it’s teen lit, and it took about a day, but I very much enjoyed it…I will probably go see the movie they are making from it.

  2. Marianne, the Strain sounds intriguing. I might have to pick that one up. I think Water for Elephants might lean too far to the chick side, but I agree it was well-written.

If you want a GREAT dystopian teen lit, pick up The Hunger Games.

  3. The Strain was enjoyable, as well as its sequel….looking forward to the third book later this year.

I read all three of the Hunger Games books…Saintseester is correct, they were awesome. I’m currently tandem reading a similar book called The Maze Runner (dystopian teen lit) with The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society…I’m kind of all over the board with my reading right now.

  4. Actually, I think Bo might enjoy The Help. It was fantastic. And, true. I actually grew up not far from Belhaven, the neighborhood that was the setting. My aunt still lives there.

Hey, Bo. We’ll keep talking about you like you’re not here, okay?
