Thursday miscellanea #112

  • Just back from a whole-family hike on Monte Sano.  We haven’t done that in much too long.  We were 0 for 3 geocaching, but that happens sometimes.
  • I was telling Saintseester at lunch this week that our pastor’s sermon last Sunday was on the need to restore civility in public discourse.  It was one of those that I knew right off wasn’t really for me, but I was glad he was saying it for those who did need to hear it.  Heh.
  • Film producing legend Dino De Laurentiis has died at 91.  RIP.
  • I’ll make a pitch for Campbell’s Chunky Healthy Request soups.  I’ve tried most of the varieties and haven’t had one that wasn’t delicious—I mean really good, not “good for a yucky old diet product”—and there is less than 300 calories in the whole can.  Good work, folks.
  • I don’t know what to make of the Cam Newton situation.  Who does?  There certainly is a lot of smoke for there to be no fire, but I’m still really hoping there isn’t.  I wish Auburn a positive outcome in this situation.
  • No excuses:  LSU deserved to win last weekend.  Les Miles did a hell of a coaching job, and the team played its heart out.
  • Lea and I haven’t made it to Red yet.  Perhaps next week.

  1. Color me jealous on the hiking. Today had the perfect weather for it!

I have fallen in love with Progresso’s Light Beef Pot Roast soup. It’s not a chunky style, but my God, the broth tastes just like pot roast juice. Yum!

It’s really bothering me that the FBI has stepped into this mess with Newton. Really, bothering me. Because I can’t figure it out. I hope it means the agent was extorting people not the other way around.

  2. ‘seester, it was indeed a great northern Alabama autumn day. I’m going to have to save some coin for a better GPSr, though. My trusty Legend just isn’t cutting it in the canopy anymore.

Noted on the Progresso. Thanks for the tip.

I’ve seen the “declined comment”s ratchet up considerably since the feds showed up. I really hope Auburn comes out of this all right.

  3. I don’t think $cam Newton knew the details, but *of course* Daddy took money. Not sure if it was from AU boosters but, that is where he ended up playing.

Ditto on LSU. The Hat hit every gamble. Return to TTown in 11 will not be as hospitable.

  4. Ya’ll bragging on LSU is making it really hard for me to rub it in. My final thoughts on the game were if Alabama had been able to score at the end or at least win it in overtime, I still would have been satisfied with the Tigers. As always, it is tough to win on the road in the SEC. Looks like Les will survive another year.

On Newton, what happens if they decide he is ineligible? Would Auburn have to forfeit their wins this season? That was LSU’s only loss. Not that I want that to happen by any stretch of the imagination but it would suck for LSU or Alabama to be left out of the SEC Championship only to have it given to a three loss team like Florida or SC because Auburn was later disqualified.

Personally, I think he is innocent. All of the other schools that recruited him are saying there was no mention of money to them. I also read his dad’s and his dad’s church’s financial records were looked at and nothing was found there. Let’s not convict him or his dad until all the evidence is in.

Someone at work asked the question when was the last time the MNC and Heisman winner came from two different teams in the same state? My guess is never. That would be something for all Alabamians to be proud of.
