I’m certain I’ve read for pleasure less in 2010 than in any other year of my literate life.
Some of the demands on my time have been things I’ve been able to control, and some haven’t. So it’s been partially elective, if I take a severe reading of the facts. Nevertheless, I was shooting it with a colleague last week, and we started talking about Stephen King.
The Stand is one of my favorite books of all-time, and my colleague had a high opinion of it as well. Then he said Duma Key was, in his view, of similar quality. I picked it up and am about a quarter of the way through it.
The newest King I’ve read is 2002’s Everything’s Eventual, and the last King novel I read was 1999’s The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon. So it’s been a while. I’m enjoying Duma Key so far. King’s done a marvelous job of creating and bringing to life for me three big, jump-off-the-page characters, none of whom I want to turn out to be evil or dead. So I’m all set up to be enjoyably manipulated.
It really does feel good to be reading again. I don’t know that I’ve ever stopped for even as long as a week, much less the months this drought has consumed. May it be the last one.

I read Duma Key last year. It won’t change your opinion about The Stand (we’re in total agreement that it’s King’s best work by far), but it’s very enjoyable and worthwhile.
I thought Duma Key was King’s best book in many years. Good “creepy” value. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.
I’m definitely enjoying it, though Jenny, you’re right: this is no threat to The Stand. Headed into the final act now. Probably have it “kilt” sometime Wednesday.
