EAA AirVenture 2010, starring the Ford Trimotor

As I mentioned in a previous post, I just got back from AirVenture.  I had hoped to get through all of my photos today, but I’m only about halfway there.

So, in lieu of the longer overview I had envisioned, I’m going to show you some shots of the Ford Trimotor.  This is a really beautiful plane, and one of the first significant airliners ever.  It was one of exactly two aircraft at the entire show that consistently made me grin like a moron every time I looked at it.

Strictly from a strength of fanhood standpoint, I am at least a moderately poor candidate to attend the world’s greatest air show.  There was a lot more for me to learn at the show than most of those around me, okay?

But wow, did I ever have a good time.  Each of us said at one time or another that the show had significantly exceeded our expectations.  Potentially interesting bullets:

  • I can’t overstate the size of this place.  I think merely dedicating yourself to walking every square yard of the venue—not stopping to look, mind, just walking—would take a day.
  • No alcohol sales or consumption inside the venue.  This bothered me much less than I thought it would, and after seeing all of the breathtaking (and potentially easily damaged by some slobbering idiot) displays, I fully understand it.
  • My faith in a genuine patriotic spirit is partially renewed.  A love for aviation ties in closely with a love for the military, which ties in closely with a love for the United States of America.  It wasn’t hard to find someone this weekend talking about what a wonderful a country we have.  Wow, I loved to hear that.

More to come.  I hope you had a good weekend.

  1. That’s such a cool looking plane and I love the look of the corrugated aluminum skin. There used to be one at the small airport near the Grand Canyon (which is only about three hours from me), but I’ve never seen it and I don’t know if it’s still there or not. Great pictures you got. It looks like it was beautiful weather for you and your family.
