It happened less than two hours ago as I type, so details are sketchy (click here for the latest from al.com).  It seems to have occurred during a biology faculty staff meeting at the Shelby Center.  Police have Dr. Amy Bishop in custody.  I heard it reported on the radio on the way home tonight that all three fatalities are faculty, and Bishop is a professor who was recently denied tenure.

UAH is my alma mater, and I’ve lived in the Huntsville area for more than 23 years. These things never quite parse, but they seem extra-senseless in your own backyard.

God be with everyone affected by this tragedy.

  1. This is truly sad. Dr. Johnson was my Biology professor.

  2. I’m still reeling over this. Joe Leahy is a member of our parish and was a volunteer coach for the school’s track team. I hope he comes through. As far as we know, he’s still in critical condition.

There were other university faculty and people present at that meeting, not just the 6 who were shot. The police say they were extraordinary and saved lives. Other than that, they aren’t talking about it. I know of one who is still in shock. It’s going to be difficult for the college to heal.

  3. I still don’t know what to say, really. I’ve spoken with a couple of professor friends from across campus (recall I spent most of my time in Morton and Roberts Halls), and they’re dazed themselves. It’s too fucked up to process and put away in a few days.
