Thursday miscellanea #62

  • It’s not getting better, the more we learn.  It’s looking very much like political correctness—more properly, fear of its zealots—has an unambiguously direct role in actually killing people now.  At least we can hope no one was offended.
  • Did you notice Ford turned in a nearly billion-dollar profit for the third quarter?  I wonder what government “assistance” is coming their way as a result?
  • They’re not “driving lights,” they’re fog lights.  Turn them the hell off on a clear night, peckerhead.
  • I haven’t had that “trap game” feeling all season, but I’m having it right now.  Lowly Mississippi State should have beaten LSU, and could have beaten Florida.  Alabama is coming off a hard-fought victory that clinched the West.  It’s at their house.  Yipes.  Don’t let up, guys.  Make me look silly for worrying.
  • I can’t believe anyone likes Southern Comfort, cotton candy, water chestnuts, carrot-raisin salad, or cranberry juice.
  • We got a new washer and dryer yesterday, which was supposed to be for Christmas, but the dryer motor gave up a month and a half short of when we would have liked it to.  No real complaints, as 17 years is an eminently reasonable life for such.  Merry Christmas, Bo and Lea.
  • 2012 opens tomorrow.  BamaDan and I shall go, if he can stand my customary let-the-crowds-disperse waiting period.

  1. If it is any consolation, I am anxiety ridden over the Saints visit to the 1-7 rams this weekend. Must be in the air…

Good for Ford. How funny that things work out so much better when you don’t allow the government to come in and take over your business.

And, how about that advice earlier last week “not to jump to conclusions” about the killer’s name. Funny, that same advice-giver sure did jump to conclusions when his buddy Gates had an encounter with a white officer who just had to be racist, right?

  2. Re: trap game. I would not be surprised to see it stay close until the half, but we should pull away in the 2nd half like we’ve done most of the season. The MSU RB (Dixon) is pretty good. Makes me a little nervous that LSU’s Scott was well on his way to having a great game against us last week till he got hurt.

Re: washer & dryer. Did you get front loaders? I’m in love with mine.

  3. Got another one about car lights: They’re PARKING lights. Not DRIVING lights. If you deem it dark enough to need your parking lights and you’re not scoping out a parking garage, turn your real lights the hell on. Dumbass.

And another thing: Riding around with the gate on your truck down does nothing to increase gas mileage (see appropriate Mythbusters episode) and only serves to make you look like a tool.

OK, and one more thing: Your car comes equipped with turn signals. All cars do. They’re there for a purpose. Use them accordingly. Take out your civil disobedience urges elsewhere.

Can you tell I’m back on the roads and exceedingly frustrated this morning?

  4. I drove a Focus as a loaner when some jerkoff dinged the Cruiser last spring. I loved it – and I have an incredible Ford bias. I’d buy one if I could find a better job….

I happen to adore cotton candy AND cranberry juice. Water chestnuts have their place in a stir-fry, if prepped right. Southern Comfort flashes me back to college. Carrot-raisin salad… meh. Must be a southern thing.

Enjoy the w/d. Hope I can get that long out of the set in my garage!

  5. You can’t make hurricanes without SoCo, Bo. Also, Grey Goose & cranberry juice???? Awesome. I’m with you on the carrot/raisin thing. Also (I bring this up ’cause it’s kin to the carrot/raisin thing and they had it at church last night) canned pear halves with mayo in them. Blech.

  6. About the carrot/raisin thing: I like it, if it’s made with Miracle Whip. But it’s better with pineapple instead of raisins. And don’t you dare put any pecans or walnuts in there.

Pear halves with mayo in them? Yuck! Right up there with celery stuffed with peanut butter or cheeze whiz.

Then again, I love to eat cottage cheese mixed with pork-n-beans, so YMMV.

  7. I like Carrot Raisin Salad AND cotton candy. I will occasionally drink cranberry juice but it’s not my favorite. I’ve even learned to eat water chestnuts but generally skip them if they are in a recipe.

Jenny: We did not get front loading machines – not quite in the budget this time. However, I’m very happy with what we got! Performance time on the dryer is vastly improved.

  8. Ditto on needing SoCo for Hurricanes. We used to play Catan until the wee hours making blender after blender of ‘Canes with our neighbors in the old neighborhood. SoCo by itself…kinda gross. Maybe Mrs. BD can fire up the Party Machine blender sometime well after BD3 arrives.

Can wait out 2012 “crowds?” I’m thinking 10 days is an empty theater…maybe. Saw a new trailer for it on HDNet preview show. It was most cool. Cusack makes all movies better: “I’m Lloyd Dobbler.”

  9. Love my Focus, kemtee. It’s not the most comfortable care in the world (and I would know – put 30K on mine in one year), but I’m getting almost 38 MPG out of it, and that makes the mileage my company pays add up fast. All the gadgets are fun too. It’s great to punch a button when my cell rings and talk. I’m thinking of upgrading to the Fusion next year.

I’m with you Bo on the raisins and Southern Comfort Bo. The former is nasty in salads and the later is just gag-inducing.

I hate fog lights, even in fog. They basically serve to blind oncoming traffic.

  10. ‘seester: Your Saints have me paying more attention to the NFL than I have in many years. I hope it happens for you.

Jenny: I’d love for us to come out and run over ’em, but I’m scared of this one, for the reasons I gave. I’ll consider a 10-point victory a roaring success. Again, I hope they make me look silly for worrying.

wxchick: As you know, you’ll almost never see me advocate for more government. This is a rare exception. I’d like for it to be considerably harder to get a driver’s license than it is. I can stand the pear halves. The cottage cheese in pork ‘n’ beans sounds really bad.

kemtee, Cheryl: We bought a Versa last year. This year, it would have been a Focus.

Lea: The dryer is a front-loader. 🙂 I’m pleased with them too. They’re quiet.

Marianne, BamaDan, Cheryl: I may have enjoyed a mixed drink in my life that contained Southern Comfort, though I can’t swear to it. I’m usually a KISS guy at the bar. I had an old boss who just drank it on the rocks. I tried it one time, and said “who in their right mind would ruin bourbon like that?” Tasted like medicine someone’s tried way too hard to flavor.

BamaDan: I’m thinking maybe Tuesday night before Thanksgiving for 2012?

Ummmm, trap game? Damn, Ingram is a grade A stud. Can we play Auburn right now?
