Thursday miscellanea #24

  • I stayed home today with respiratory nonsense and surprisingly significant fatigue, though I’m feeling better now than I was.  There is injustice in the inherent inability to enjoy such as lazy time.
  • I think M. Night Shyamalan has made three better movies, but I enjoyed The Happening, finding it taut, well-cast, and a return to form.  Given its press, I was braced for a disaster.
  • The Dark and Stormy Book Club went on hiatus for the holidays, and now looks unlikely to return.  Thank you to Mrs. Chili, to Saintseester, and to everyone who listened and blogged with us for the stimulating explorations we undertook together.
  • The solar-powered cabin ventilation in the 2010 Toyota Prius is a neat and sensible feature, but let’s please not get carried away praising its “innovation.”  The Mazda 929 had it in 1991.
  • I’m a respectful tourist when I come to your part of the country.  Please reciprocate when you come to mine.  I do care “how you do it up north” or wherever, because I think such sociocultural differences are interesting.  But please, keep the arrogance and presumption to yourself.
  • Shell lost almost $3 billion in the fourth quarter.  Let’s be sure to keep making a lot of racket about “windfall profit taxes.”
  • Oh, and Nancy Pelosi called herself “nonpartisan” this week.

  1. Man, we share part of a brain. I was thinking about the oil companies today, and how when there is a downturn in the market, no one wants to rush to their aide or return any taxes to them. Weird, huh?

Oh, and did you see? Some financial institutions are re-thinking taking bailout money because they do not want the gov’t interference that promises to come with it.

I got a lens hood for my wide angle today. It does make me look cool and like I know what I am doing — sort of like having a gavel.

  2. Yeah, but the gavel is far more contextual. You can’t just walk around with one of those. 🙂

Ford, so far, is not taking bailout money either. “Miyagi have hope for you.”

  3. Yep, that right there will give Ford the edge should we ever decide to buy a truck.

And, who says I can’t walk around with a gavel? I have a gavel. Why can’t I use it? Honest to God, you and your strange sensibilities. 🙂

  4. I love the image of saintseester walking around with a gavel, banging stupid folks on the head when necessary. Man, that’d do this world some good! ;->

About Bo’s first item of miscellania: It’s kind of like being sick on a weekend or holiday. There’s something inherently unfair about it. And it always makes me think of Calvin and Hobbes.
