Thursday miscellanea #20

  • I didn’t make any formal resolutions for 2009.  I believe I’m mostly aware of my shortcomings, and really, most of them are trending correctly.  That’s going to be enough this January 1.
  • Husbands, check it out:  if you resolved to help your wife more around the house this year, that’s great.  She’ll be happier day to day, and plus you’ll probably get laid more.  Be advised that when you’re helping with laundry, you really have to be folding and putting away to make a difference.  Getting the stuff to the washer, and then moving it from the washer to the dryer, while necessary, is not that big a contribution.
  • The first song I ever heard on CD was “All She Wants To Do Is Dance” by Don Henley.  The first CD I owned was Yngwie J. Malmsteen’s Rising Force’s Odyssey.  I remember each vividly.  I have no such corresponding memories for the first time I heard an MP3 file.
  • We were so damned sick for so damned long last year for Christmas break, and there isn’t a hint of anything on anyone this year.  That’s definitely better.
  • I’m about halfway through Gears of War 2, and it’s worthy.  The gameplay, sound, and graphics are all outstanding.  Plus, the story is much richer this time, which was the only real complaint I had with the first one.  I’ll finish it this weekend, and then get into Condemned and Condemned 2, which Santa Claus brought me.
  • Know what irritates me?  Someone who never just orders off the menu.  You know those people, who always have to add this, or subtract that, or can you do this, or can you substitute that?  Is that you?  Do you have any idea how petty you look when you do that?  Would you have us believe that your palate is consistently so damned delicate that you can’t deign to consume any of the focus-group-tested-out-the-ass menu items as they come?
  • There is a 2003 Sheryl Crow concert popping up on HDNet periodically, and it’s excellent, both aurally and visually.  I try to be a little distinctive in my celebrity crushes, and you can’t get any more mainstream than Sheryl Crow—but man, what a freakishly good-looking woman.
  • The STP Gorton’s Taco Bell Samsonite BASF Kotex Craftsman Brookstone Allstate Sugar Bowl is on Fox tomorrow night, which means Brent Musburger won’t be calling it.  This is a Good Thing.  Roll Tide.

  1. Remember that meme that asked if you could marry a celebrity who would it be? I answered Dave Grohl and I got to see Foo Fighters on HDNet today. It was so f*ckin awesome. First time I’ve ever watched that channel.

I am so grateful when my husband washes the dishes. I agree with you about what it does for my disposition!

  2. Ah, Yngwie! I remember him well. I think I got “Trilogy” first, follwed by “Odyssey,” and then two or three of his following CDs. Brilliant guitar player. Cookiemaker and I were just looking at some “100 Greatest Guitar Players of All Time” list on the web last night, and he was on there, and Cookiemaker said, “Who’s THAT?!”

I was more than happy to show her. 🙂

  3. Fighting: That’s a good channel to monitor for live music. I’ve seen several great shows (Sammy Hagar and the Waboritas, Velvet Revolver, Pink Floyd, Lindsey Buckingham, Barry Manilow…). Just be careful around your little ones; they don’t edit the language in the “stage banter,” which depending on the artist can get pretty raunchy.

nhfalcon: Yeah, he was/is a killer shredder, and I think the Odyssey record (with Joe Lynn Turner on lead vocals) was the best-sounding band he ever had. I actually got to see him with my bud Charles about eight years ago at 328 Performance Hall, a charming dive in Nashville that isn’t there anymore. He was good. However, approximately 75% of the reason we went was to see his opener/co-headliner: LIZZY BORDEN! Yup, we got to see the Deal with the Devil tour, and Lizzy lived up to our expectations.

    I miss 328.

  4. On #2 – you are sooooo correct. When I heard that the pharmaceutical companies were working on a Viagra-like drug for women, I told my husband that unless it can clean the kitchen and do 3 loads of laundry, it’s not gonna do a thing for me…
