George Carlin dead at 71

George Carlin died of heart failure yesterday in Los Angeles. He was 71.

I had a fever the only night I ever had a ticket to see him live.  Guess I’ll have to wait a while longer now.

This is a great loss for all lovers of language, as well as anyone who enjoys the skillful aggravation of the too-tightly-wound. I think we shall never again see his like. Thank goodness he was prolific.

RIP.

  1. This saddens me in ways that surprise me. I had a great deal of respect for this man, because he was willing to call bullshit whenever and wherever he saw it. We really need more like him – people with access to microphones who are smart enough to see through the veneer and call it like they see it.

  2. Lots of Orwellian sensibility in his deconstruction of language, as well. The euphemism never met a greater enemy than George Carlin.

  3. We saw him at the VBC a couple of years ago. (I guess that’s the show you had to miss?)

George was just awesome, the show made even more fun by the cash bar in the lobby. The only evening was like a big, brainiac keg party with the world’s best host.

  4. I loved his wit, his absolutely dead-on verbal excoriation of our culture and language’s absurdity and bullshit. He never saw a line he didn’t hurl himself across. He will be so missed.

  5. It’s gotta be at least more then six years ago, when I saw him because I’m pretty sure Nathan wasn’t born. It was a great show. We (sans Bo) had good seats, too. I remember him doing the schtick about “stuff”.

  6. It was at least eight years ago, because I was marooned on the couch at our old house. He must have been here since then.
