Father’s Day on Smith Lake

It was a beautiful day in northern Alabama. Both boys drove us around Smith Lake:

This is Jenny’s friend Christy:

This is Christy providing afternoon entertainment by jumping off “the rock” (not-great quality, but this is the only footage):

Dad’s had a house down there for most of two decades, and I’ve never gone off that rock.

The boys got me Boom Blox for the Wii for Father’s Day. Headed to get some in before bed. Hope all you dads had a great day too.

  1. It was nice. The boys are finally getting old enough that it’s not exhausting watching them. We still have to pay attention but at two and three years old you can’t let them out of your sight. There are too many steep stairs, too many ways to get out of that house, and lots of deep water. (When Nathan was about two he escaped and I found him wandering up the driveway.) Now, they are a little more content sitting down to play video games or with their toys when they aren’t at the dock or in a boat. So, for the first time in a long time, I actually got to relax just a little bit, too!

  2. That sounded rather judgmental, didn’t it? I guess I’ve just been thinking about the “life style” changes that are beginning to look inevitable. I see fewer powerboats roaring about here at Cape Cod. The nearest marina operator says some folks just are not going to put their boats in the water this year. I wonder how the boat sellers are doing (not to mention the RV folks). What must it cost in fuel for those highway yachts already on the road?

  3. Gerry – I’ve been watching the “specials” and the availability of the beach condos in the area that we go to vacation. In years past you would have had to book two months in advance to get a condo and there were never any summer discounts. Although they haven’t started cutting the prices across the board, I noticed that there are lots of “last minute get away specials” that tells me they are not totally booked this summer. More evidence of “life style” changes as people start scaling back on summer trips to the beach…
