HD DVD

Two high-definition DVD formats, HD DVD and Blu-ray, are vying for your entertainment dollar. Which one should you get? HD DVD, of course.

Why is that? Well, because I went with HD DVD, and I want to be right.

Wasn’t a tough call for me. Halo 3 sold me an Xbox 360, and the add-on HD DVD drive is $179.99. That’s hundreds under any standalone player of either format, so there you go.

There is much teeth-gnashing and spittle-laden incoherence to be had at Google on the topic of HD DVD vs. Blu-ray. There are reasonable arguments for either side in there somewhere.

I will say that in addition to the low additional cost for me to pick HD DVD, I was further encouraged by the fact that the adult film industry seems to be supporting HD DVD more than Blu-ray to this point. Whether you’re an adult film consumer or not, that’s an important indicator. Porn is a money monster of nearly unbelievable scope, and you can bet that whatever the reason(s), such a selection is consistent with continued growth.

So far I’ve got King Kong (because it came with the player) and Superman: The Movie (because I wanted to do a direct comparison with something I already owned on standard DVD). Full Metal Jacket will be here tomorrow. A bunch of other Kubrick films (including my #1 and #2 of all-time, 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining) are coming out week after next, and I went ahead and ordered those too. (But no Barry Lyndon yet? Come on; that lighting and composition would be spectacular!)

I’ve never waded into a full-on format war before. I’m not all the way to uncomfortable, but I might be just a skosh queasy (particularly now that I’ve dropped some library dollars).

  1. I’m betting on HD DVD, too. But I’m betting on the stupidity of Americans to drive it. I can imagine them in the Walmart:

    “Which one? Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?”
“I don’t want nunna dat blue stuff. I thought we was going to get some HD movies fer that new monster TV you hocked lil bobby fer.”

  2. Wha? Seester, speak ENGLISH!

My husband is holding back on making any format changes until the t.v. that he wants is made available. Really, it doesn’t matter all that much to me, and I doubt that I’ll be replacing the nearly 200 DVDs I have with a new format (though I WILL buy new ones in whatever upgrade comes into the Chili household….)
